April 26-28, 2019  /  9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily

A unique opportunity to work with acclaimed New York artist Fran O’Neill in this intensive atelier-style class in Portland, Oregon.

The class operates with the underlying assumption that drawing is a direct examination of our perceptions and experience of the world, and as such, drawing is/can be transformative to an art practice. We will be working from one or more live models, primarily using charcoal on paper with other materials introduced on a case by case basis.  The class is open to all (however, some drawing experience is best) and is limited to 10 students due to space constraints.

Instructor Fran O’Neill holds dual citizenship in the U.S.A. and in Australia, dividing her time between Australia and New York. She teaches at the Art Students League in NYC, as well as at New York Studio School and is represented by the Sears Peyton Gallery in the Chelsea art district in Manhattan. Firmly grounded in drawing from life, she maintains those fundamentals as she focuses on her abstract work. Her paintings are in corporate, museum and private collections.  See www.searspeyton.com under “Exhibitions,” and http://www.franoneill.com/, “bio/cv” for more information.

More on Instruction Days will be full, as we will work from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; if there is interest, need, and the class would like it, then those hours may be extended. The scale of the work will range from moderate to very large as we examine the interaction of the picture plane, along with strategies to explore further pictorial elements of drawing. A review of each students’ work will form the basis for the culminating critique.

More on the instructor O’Neill works with students to solve the issues they encounter by orienting her teaching both to the individual and to the needs of both the group; she builds on the master artists of both past and present in a creative and deeply thoughtful manner; and she generously shares the wisdom she has gained in her years as a dedicated artist.

Materials A materials list will be sent out prior to the class, and students will bring those materials with them on the first day.

Attendance Students are expected to attend the entire class every day.
