In building the installation, “Longing,” I became swept up by the poverty, fear, and longing for a safe place to be as Mary and Joseph fled to escape political persecution in Palestine to resettle in Egypt when Jesus was born. Their struggles to find a place to raise him without fear is a sacred connection to the issues of our day and the deep sense of homelessness and loss as friends, family, community, and country are left behind.
