Blackfish Gallery "Drawing the Line"

First up as tools for human communication and expression, you would think that lines are simple to use, talk, or make art about. Yet the work for “Drawing the Line” is anything but simple, posing responses to questions about the inexhaustible nature of lines. What makes a line? What are its possibilities? Is it symbolic, metaphorical, installed, drawn, painted, realistic, or abstract?

The Slow Regard of Hidden Things

2021 SR bird1.jpg

In this new art installation, Clark examines what it means to be a white, middle-class woman who is an artist, wife, and mother. Using cast plaster, tissue paper mache, and cheesecloth, the artist combines Greek pillars, a vintage baptismal dress, an antique Victorian teapot, and a lamp to creates metaphors to explore notions of race, class, culture, gender, family, and vocation.

The exhibit will include a virtual opening at the gallery on January 7 at 6:00 p.m. See the events calendar for supporting events throughout the month.

In Clark’s new installation work, “Longing,” she juxtaposes the beauty of the Christ story with the refugee status of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Through materials, metaphor, and scale, she intertwines the archetypal and sacred connection of immigration with the Holy Family. The show is up through December 29th.

Longing: Immigration and the Right to Be

2019! Mary Horizontal FB.jpg

In building the installation, “Longing,” I became swept up by the poverty, fear, and longing for a safe place to be as Mary and Joseph fled to escape political persecution in Palestine to resettle in Egypt when Jesus was born. Their struggles to find a place to raise him without fear is a sacred connection to the issues of our day and the deep sense of homelessness and loss as friends, family, community, and country are left behind.

Closing Reception

Clark will be at Blackfish Gallery from 3-5pm on Saturday, August 31st to host an informal closing reception for her show “Pilgrimage.” A gathering of new installations and paintings that reflect on Clark’s mother’s journey into deeper dementia, the work reaches out in a sensitive and moving manner to touch the hearts and minds of all who have been on difficult journeys in their lives whether physical, emotional or spiritual. This is the last day to see the show, and she looks forward to seeing all those who have been meaning to come, but haven’t! She also welcomes all those who would like to view the work again and talk further about it.

Pilgrimage

Clark’s upcoming exhibit “Pilgrimage” examines dementia, spirituality and family as seen through the lens of stories recounted by Clark’s mother as she she moves through the stages of dementia herself. Using traditional and ancient Byzantine iconographic methods, as well as those of contemporary painting, found and made objects, Clark has created a trio of installations that transpose her mother’s framework of sorrow and loss in her life into art pieces that reflect the compression of time and the journey that is individual, yet at the same time universal.

Exhibit and all events are at Blackfish Gallery, 420 NW 9th, Portland, OR
